Frances McDormand is commanding as a woman avenging the murder of her daughter in Martin McDonaghs modern-day western Frances McDormand gives a powerhouse performance in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, an uproarious delight of a film that snaps the eyelids up like roller-blinds and had the Venice film festival audience breaking into rounds of spontaneous applause. She plays Mildred Hayes, an angel of vengeance at loggerheads with the world. Lock the door and bolt the windows. Mildred comes rampaging up Main Street like hard-boiled Spencer Tracy in Bad Day at Black Rock. Playwright In Bruges but Three Billboards is on […]

‘Difficult People’ repeatedly made jokes about Kevin Spacey and no one seemed to notice

Watching Hulu’s Difficult People, you may notice that there are a load of jokes about Kevin Spacey.  Without context, these jokes may seem like a fun gag, but now with multiple sexual misconduct allegations coming to light, it’s hard to comprehend how all of this was hiding in plain sight. Spacey has denied the allegations. The show, which stars Julie Klausner as Julie Kessler and Billy Eichner as Billy Epstein, features a trove of jokes pertaining Spacey, from the actor liking younger men, to being closeted.  “What do kids hate?” Kessler asks Epstein in one scene. The two then list […]

The National Park Service can’t handle this naked statue of a woman

Image: vladimir herrera The National Park Service has apparently never seen a naked woman before.  On Wednesday, the National Park Service finally denied a permit to Catharsis on the Mall, the group organizing to temporarily bring a 45-foot statue of a naked woman, titled “R-Evolution,” to Washington. The NPS cited their concerns about how the statute would impact the “cultural identity” of the area — which, btw, mostly includes giant groups of tourists in cargo khaki pants.  Okay. The incredible reason this woman moved back to the town she swore to escape as a teen.

When Ami Vitori was a teenager, she couldn’t wait for the chance to leave her hometown. And when she finally did, she never thought she’d ever look back. After all, Middletown, Ohio may once have been called the “American dream” for being a bustling Rust Belt town home to a prosperous steel company and dozens of paper mills, but it had long since lost its way. By the 1980s, it had turned into a shuttered wasteland. Due to increased automation, jobs fell away. Drug addictions soared. Many townsfolk could barely afford their rent anymore. And by the time Vitori was […]

Back from the dead: is the slasher movie set to make a killing?

The hit Happy Death Day hints at renewed interest in the masked killer genre, with Jamie Lee Curtis back in the Halloween saga and Scream getting revived Vampire in Brooklyn, Thinner, The Dentist, Leprechaun 3 the horror genre in the mid-90s was terrifying for all the wrong reasons. It was barely even a thing, at least outside of the very bottom shelf of Blockbuster, a place where kids would awkwardly hover before begging parents to let them watch some film about evil clowns, evil racists. Scream brought back the horror genre, yet ultimately killed the slasher film once again. Last […]

Larry David to Lisa Simpson life lessons from TV’s top role models

From eight-year-old Mensa members to smeghead slobs and dolls-house-loving detectives, here are the small-screen idols who have taught us everything Larry David, Curb Your Enthusiasm There arent many moments in Curb Your Enthusiasm when Larry David could be described as heroic. Two stand out though. Theres the time he conducts a Wagner-playing orchestra outside an enemys house who despises the German composer; the other is when he saves the blushes of a chef with Tourettes syndrome by leading a restaurant in a rousing swear-a-thon. Its hardly Jon Snow taming the White Walkers, but Larry David isnt your typical TV idol. […]

Testy letter from the tooth fairy is truly one for the ages

The tooth fairy has quality standards, and they do not include bits of cereal. Barry T. Tooth Fairy, a London-area tooth fairy who usually retrieves the teeth of a young Mr. Sam Warren, was forced to leave a tough but fair note alongside Sam’s monetary reward earlier this week.  Why? Sam’s lost tooth had a bit too much “wear and tear.” SEE ALSO: Neil deGrasse Tyson insists his children investigate the tooth fairy “…in this case,” Barry wrote, “your tooth had to be referred up the committee for further analysis … We have detected more than trace amounts of Fanta […]

Jennifer Garner gives the best ‘Hamilton’ summary thanks to dentist drugs

Image: jennifer.garner/instagram Remember the glory that was David After Dentist? While there are not that many people that beat classic internet video, but Jennifer Garner’s recent #TBT comes damn close. In an undated video of herself shared on Instagram, Garner is seriously feeling all the feels when it comes to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton—and while that musical alone can invoke the deepest of feelings, it’s a safe bet that the laughing gas and dentist anesthesia helped bring it out of her.  SEE ALSO: Simone Biles kindly shared her very own post-wisdom tooth removal video Throwback Thursday— that time I had dental […]

Cool that Taylor Swift has a personalized voicemail greeting

Image: Christopher Polk/Getty Images for TAS For an attempted rebrand, Taylor Swift’s new single “Look What You Made Me Do” is pretty unsurprising. (Like why is the “new Taylor” still rehashing old feuds?) Still, there’s a part of the song that is genuinely astounding — Taylor Swift, age 27, has a personalized voicemail greeting. And, presumably, her voice mailbox is not full! Amazing. SEE ALSO: You’ll never guess how many times ‘Taylor Swift’ appears on the ‘Reputation’ cover The voicemail-greeting-heard-’round-the-world, of course, is the wildly subtle, “I’m sorry. The old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now. Why? Oh, […]
